What Lifesum does
Lifesum combines a food diary with meal-planning and habit tools. You can track calories, macronutrients, water, exercise, body measurements, and weight-related goals. Its current app-store listings also advertise food ratings, a weekly Life Score, recipes, nutrition plans, and connections with health and fitness services. On supported versions, food can be logged through a database search, barcode scan, typed description, voice input, food photo, favorites, or a quick manual entry. Lifesum’s current help center identifies the photo, voice, and text interpretation system as AI Tracking and says it is a Premium feature. You can switch back to classic database tracking if you prefer more direct control. Apple users can exchange selected exercise, step, weight, nutrition, and hydration information with Apple Health. Android and Wear OS users can connect supported services such as Health Connect or Samsung Health. This makes Lifesum flexible as an organizing tool, but it remains a consumer wellness app. Its scores, calorie targets, food ratings, and recommendations are not diagnoses or individualized clinical nutrition assessments.
- Multiple food-entry methods
- Calorie, macro, hydration, exercise, and measurement tracking
- Optional health-platform integrations
Meal planning and logging limits
The clearest reason to consider Premium is the combination of recipes, scheduled meal suggestions, and grocery lists. Lifesum currently offers plans covering approaches such as high protein, vegan, paleo, keto, and intermittent fasting, although which plans appear can depend on your settings and app version. You can use recipes as instructions or inspiration and change suggested meals. However, Lifesum’s help center says its meal plans are based on general recommendations rather than being tailored to your exact goals. Allergy support is also incomplete: the company says it lists commonly requested allergies but cannot cover every allergen, sometimes leaving you to make substitutions outside the app. Logging convenience should not be confused with measurement accuracy. Lifesum warns that blurry or complicated photos and vague descriptions can reduce AI accuracy, while portion sizes are estimates that you can edit. Brand, recipe, and cooking-method differences can also change nutrition values. Its support pages separately explain how to report incorrect database items and repair a barcode linked to the wrong product. Check serving sizes, package labels, ingredients, and quantities before relying on an entry—especially when accuracy matters for medical care.
- Plans include grocery-list support
- Plans remain general guidance
- AI and database results require verification
Free version and Premium cost
Lifesum is free to download on Apple and Google platforms, but both store listings describe the free experience only as having “limited features.” The public descriptions do not provide a dependable feature-by-feature free-tier comparison. Lifesum’s current Premium guide places AI Tracking, meal plans and programs, adjustable calorie and macro goals, custom foods and recipes, expanded nutrient details, and the complete recipe collection behind Premium. Official store descriptions advertise one-month, three-month, and annual auto-renewing subscriptions. The US App Store’s purchase list currently displays several overlapping offers, including three-month options at $29.99 and $39.99 and annual options at $99.99 and $119.99, plus additional entries whose billing terms are not always clear. That makes a single universal price misleading. Check the offer presented inside your own app for the billing period, introductory terms, trial availability, renewal price, and included features. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled through the applicable purchase channel. Removing the app does not itself cancel an active subscription. Because offers can change by platform, account, region, and promotion, current pricing should be rechecked immediately before publication or purchase.
- Limited free access
- Premium unlocks the main planning tools
- Prices and offers vary
Meal plans and grocery lists require an active Premium subscription.
Data privacy
Lifesum handles information that can reveal a detailed picture of your health and daily routine. Its current privacy notice lists dietary information, nutrition and hydration records, exercise, body measurements, health-questionnaire responses, uploaded images, location, app activity, device information, payment data, and advertising or marketing data. The company says information about what you eat, exercise, measurements, weight goals, and allergies may qualify as health data and is processed with explicit consent for core functions and personalization. Lifesum also identifies service providers supporting hosting, payments, AI-based multimodal tracking, marketing measurement, and customer support. Optional integrations create additional data flows. When you connect Apple Health, Health Connect, Fitbit, Oura, Garmin, or another supported service, Lifesum may read or write selected nutrition, hydration, sleep, exercise, calorie, or step information according to the permissions you grant. Apple’s developer-supplied label says identifiers may be used for cross-app tracking and that health, contact, and identifier data may be linked to you. Google Play says the app may collect and share personal, financial, and other data categories. Review permissions carefully, avoid integrations you do not need, and use Lifesum’s account settings or contact process for access, consent withdrawal, or deletion requests.
- Health and lifestyle data may be linked to your account
- Connected services add separate privacy relationships
- App-store labels are developer-supplied and may change
Who should use it
Lifesum is a reasonable fit if you want structured meal ideas, appreciate a visual food diary, and are willing to log consistently. It is particularly practical when recipes and a grocery list reduce your weekly planning effort, or when saved foods and repeat meals make tracking faster over time. Test the limited version with several ordinary days before subscribing. Include packaged food, a homemade meal, and a restaurant meal so you can judge whether correcting portions and entries feels sustainable. Look elsewhere if you want completely hands-off meal planning, need comprehensive allergy filtering, dislike calorie-focused interfaces, or expect a photo to produce clinically precise nutrition information. Tracking may also be inappropriate if it increases anxiety, guilt, restriction, or eating-disorder behaviors. Lifesum cannot diagnose a condition, determine whether a diet is safe for your medical history, or replace a registered dietitian or clinician. The CDC describes food tracking as only one tool within a broader approach that includes eating patterns, physical activity, sleep, and stress management. If medication, pregnancy, chronic disease, digestive symptoms, or an eating disorder affects what you can eat, make nutrition decisions with a licensed professional rather than relying on an app-generated target or plan.
- Try real-world logging before paying
- Choose professional care for clinical nutrition needs
- Stop or reconsider tracking if it harms your relationship with food
